COURSE DESCRIPTION: 

The therapeutic use of resistance in an aquatic therapy program, whether applied manually, in the pool, or mechanically, is an integral part of the patient’s Plan of Care when the ultimate goal is to improve strength, endurance and overall physical function. Learn the similarities and differences between gravity and buoyancy resistance exercise, the application of buoyant and surface area equipment, and the differences between isotonic, isometric and isokinetic resistant exercises on land versus in the water. This hands-on workshop will provide you with new tools for your aqua tool chest to benefit ortho and neuro patients.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

¨        Determne Plan of Care

¨        Identify differences between gravity and buoyancy resistant exercise

¨        Examine isotonic, isometric and isokinetic resistance on land versus in water

¨        Experiment with props in the pool

 

FACULTY: Terri Mitchell, BA, PTA, ATRIC, has been involved with aquatic fitness since 1982. She is a Training Specialist with the Aquatic Exercise Association, a Licensed Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) specializing in aquatic therapy, and instructor of a variety of aquatic fitness classes to persons of all ages and abilities. Terri is on staff at the University of Texas at Austin and enjoys working with young adults in the water. She holds certifications from AEA, ATRI, and IAR. Terri is a Certified Personal Trainer for both land and water. She is co-author of “Applications of PNF Techniques in the Aquatic Setting” manual and co-producer of “PNF in the Pool” video. She is the 2001 recipient of ATRI’s “Dolphin Award”.
