COURSE DESCRIPTION: 

What is the purpose of tests and measures in aquatic therapy? The following basic measurements in aquatic exercise will be reviewed: repetitions, time, accuracy of movement, percent of task completion, number of cues, level of assist, quality of performance, heart rate, perceived exertion, pain level, use of floatation, water resistance, goniometry and manual muscle testing. The basic measurements lead into a discussion of goal setting and progressions. 

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

1.  Describe the purpose of measurements in aquatic exercise/therapy.

2.  Explore five measurements in aquatic exercise/therapy.

3.  Identify aquatic exercise/therapy long term and short-term goals.

4.  Describe an aquatic exercise/therapy progression of the short-term goal.

 

FACULTY: Carolyn Sprehe, BS, ATRIC, specializes in water-based programs for people with developmental disabilities. She has a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science from Northeast Missouri State/Truman University, is ATRI certified and is a swim coach for the Special Olympics of Missouri. Carolyn received the 2003 Outstanding Recreation Provider Award sponsored by the Recreation Council of Greater St. Louis.
