2215 – Pre-Gait and Gait Skills in Children with Developmental Challenges

COURSE DESCRIPTION: 

Examine how gait skills are developed and how to facilitate them in children with neuromotor or developmental deficits. This course will present ideas to increase sensory and body awareness, balance responses and recovery skills, weight bearing, weight shifting, upright standing and walking in children with a variety of developmental differences.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

·         Demonstrate knowledge of pre-gait components

·         Explore benefits of upright positioning

·         Discover five aquatic activities to develop beginning gait skills

·         Identify one handling technique to maintain gait skills in older children.

FACULTY: Dori Maxon PT, PCS, MEd, ATRIC, is a physical therapist, specializing in pediatrics and aquatics. In 1991, she founded SNAP, a non-profit community-based aquatic program in Berkeley, CA, serving children with special needs. Dori has been honored with the 1999 Tsunami Spirit award, the 2001 ATRI Professional of the Year, and the 2004 John K. Williams Award.
