COURSE DESCRIPTION: 

Case studies will be presented to describe the benefits of swimming for adults with neuromuscular impairments. Cases will describe swimmers with traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy, cerebral vascular accident, and several rare neuromuscular syndromes. Information will include descriptions of progression of skills, changes over time, and the value of the experience for the swimmer. 

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

1) Describe modifications to swimming strokes for people with neuromuscular impairments.

2) Explore progressions and outcome measures.

3) Examine potential barriers to swimming that exist for people with disabilities.

 

FACULTY: Bess Maxwell, PhD, PT, is an Exercise Physiologist, Certified Aquatic Physical Therapist, Certified Adaptive Aquatics Instructor, Red Cross Water Safety Instructor and Certified Lifeguard with 20 years of experience. She co-founded ShowMe Aquatics & Fitness in St. Charles, Missouri, and has worked with individuals, ranging from one year to 68 years and of a wide range of abilities. In her leadership role with ShowMe Aquatics, she worked to develop the board, staff and programming, raise funds, provide public relations, and design ShowMe Aquatics’ new facility.
