COURSE DESCRIPTION: This workshop is for individuals working with children with physical, cognitive, sensory, and/or psychological disabilities. Add to your repertoire of assessment techniques. Discover fun and engaging ways to determine functional levels of cognition, motor development, physical fitness, and social interaction. Learn how to design play-with-purpose activities. Goal setting and progress documentation will be included as related to development of IEP goals. Integrating the aquatic therapy program with the total educational program of the child will be stressed.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

·     Develop a list of six factors to include in any assessment.

·     Identify the influence of perceptual-motor function on assessment results.

·     Discover a variety of in-water assessments for cognition, motor development, physical fitness, and social interaction.

·     Obtain samples of forms useful for documenting assessment results.

·     Develop strategies for integrating aquatic therapy goals with a child’s total educational program.

 

FACULTY:  Susan J. Grosse, MS, currently president of Aquatic Consulting & Education Resources, has over 40 years experience in aquatics as a teacher, as well as in a variety of leadership roles at the local, national, and international levels. She is past president of the American Association for Active Lifestyles and Fitness and past chair of the Aquatic Council of AAHPERD. Her publications include work in adapted aquatics, lifeguarding, instructional swim, water exercise, posttraumatic stress disorder, crisis management, contagion, and program administration. She has been a speaker throughout the United States, as well as in Canada, Ireland, and Egypt. She received the ATRI Tsumani Spirit Award in 2006.
