COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is designed for core and lumbar spine rehabilitation using several different aquatic techniques all designed to enhance: range of motion, balance, neuromuscular re-education, functional activities, and pre-gait activities. We will review the basic anatomy of the lumbar and abdominal musculature that is pertinent to a healthy low back, while discussing the common symptoms of degenerative disc, osteoarthritis, and post-stroke complications of the lumbar spine. Twenty exercises will be examined in a progressive fashion while exploring how they will benefit the treatment of the lumbar spine. Evidence-based literature will be discussed, as well as how to critically review literature to determine the most reliable and non-biased information to justify the work that we do.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
1) Identify the key muscles in the trunk to stretch and strengthen in the
water: transverses abdominus and multifidus.
2) Determine which exercises to administer depending on the acuity of the
patient’s symptoms.
3) Explore
the latest in hydrotherapy, evidence-based practice:
how to make a difference with every patient you treat with five minutes of
research using public, FREE databases.
