COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is intended for
practitioners who need a pediatric aquatic foundation as a prerequisite for the
Pediatric Specialty Certificate Program or simply to understand the
application of aquatics to assist children with physical and/or neurological
development. The information and hands-on
instruction will focus on pediatric indications, precautions, and contra
indications for aquatic therapy treatment. We will also show how to optimize
your aquatic environment for safety, learning and accessibility for children
with disabilities. Motor development and the aquatic motor development model
will be discussed and practiced along with hydrodynamic applications. Pediatric
handling techniques will be modified for learning motor control and are
essential to the water adjustment process. Participants will learn aquatic
skills progressions and adaptive techniques utilizing fun interactive teaching
methods.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
1. Determine indications for utilizing aquatic therapy with pediatric
populations.
2. Identify health conditions were precautions or special consideration should
be taken for children to participate in aquatic therapy.
3. Optimize your aquatic environment for safety, learning and accessibility for
children with disabilities.
4. Utilize hydrodynamic applications to promote motor development in children.
5. Examine methods for establishing motor learning sequences in aquatics.
6. Explore how to handle children with altered body shapes and densities in the
water.
7. Demonstrate the ability to make a successful teaching adaptation for an
aquatic skill progression based upon a specific movement limitation.
FACULTY: Julia Meno-Fettig, CTRS, CMT, ATRIC, is the founder/owner of Therapeutic Aquatics, Inc. and aquatictherapyinfo.com, specializing in consulting, information and rehabilitation. She is a presenter for the Aquatic Therapy Rehab Institute, Inc. and is the author and publisher of The "Bad Ragaz Ring Method Visual Instructional Manual and Video".
