COURSE
DESCRIPTION:
This course will address the
use of therapeutic warm water exercise for back pain. Current research on back
pain and core strengthening will be used to create effective vertical aquatic
rehabilitation techniques. Practitioners engaged in aquatic rehab for back
patients will learn useful exercises to help clients create functional core
strength to improve ADL and decrease or prevent back pain. Exercises and
progressions will be appropriate for individual or small group exercise in a
clinical setting. Neurological impairments and treatment of spinal cord injury
are outside the scope of this course.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
1) Discuss research regarding back pain and
optimal techniques for core strengthening.
2) Consider the qualities of vertical
aquatic training that make it ideal for spinal rehabilitation.
3) Determine pain management strategies,
potential limitations/contraindications for this population.
4) Examine
vertical aquatic techniques to build alignment awareness, core stability,
functional gait, core endurance and strength.
5) Experience
vertical aquatic training techniques and exercise progressions for core
strengthening at various depths of immersion.
