COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course provides essential education for clinicians using warm water therapy to treat pain-affected patients. Pain impacts function. People living with persistent pain commonly exhibit muscle guarding, inappropriate muscle recruitment, and/or inappropriate motor sequencing. These movement characteristics are often the beginning of a downward spiral, as increased pain couples with decreased physical activity. The resulting structural degradation will impact alignment, balance, gait/ambulation, endurance, strength, ROM, body composition, ADLs, social interaction, mental and physical health.

With better understanding of neuropathic pain, practitioners and people in pain can work to offset functional changes and improve quality of life. This course is intended for anyone treating, educating, and optimizing function in patients with chronic pain.

Research supports: people participating in aquatic therapy report decreased pain, improved exercise adherence, and increased function.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

á      Review researched theoretical information about persistent pain (understanding and explaining the mechanism of Neuropathic pain).

á      Provide practical experiences and guidelines for pain education and amelioration programming, including ideal pool characteristics.

á      Discuss pre / post treatment assessment of function related to this population, including relative and absolute contraindications for participation in aquatic therapy.

á      Outline and demonstrate aquatic treatment strategies including:

o   Benefits of warm water immersion and aquatic therapy in the treatment of persistent pain (researched, established pool therapy outcomes).

o   Techniques to calm the central nervous system and decrease pain – teaching useful coping strategies in and out of the pool.

o   Sample pool exercises, techniques, and progressions for this population, related to pain-created weakness / dysfunction, muscular imbalances, and client goals.

o   Patient and clinician resources.
