(Classroom: 9:40-10:40 am)

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  Stretching recommendations are clouded by misconceptions and conflicting research reports. This lecture reviews the current literature on stretching and range-of-motion. Currently, there seems to be a lot of confusion about how and when stretching should be used as part of the warm up, and some people are under the impression that stretching should be avoided all together. Professionals should know the demands of different stretching techniques on muscles when making recommendations to clients. An individualized approach may be most effective based on inter-subject variation and differences between healthy and injured tissues. WeÕll review the importance of flexibility, and establish guidelines and some recommendations in order to have a safe and effective program.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

1)    Examine scientific research on these topics.

2)    Establish guidelines on exercise prescription for flexibility training.

3)    Discuss practical application of exercise prescription.
