2209 – Aquatic Intervention in the Treatment of Balance Issues

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Falls are the primary reason for adults over 50 to seek emergency room care. The unique properties of water provide an ideal medium to address balance issues. This class will provide information regarding the multifactorial issues of balance, how water allows for fine tuning of oneีs balance skills, and specific exercise progressions to accommodate motor learning.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

1)    Determine the parameters and skills, which assist with balance acquisition.

2)    Evaluate balance deficits in patients and provide a logical treatment progression.

3)    Explore why aquatic therapy progressions can enhance balance.

4)    Provide a logical motor program to enhance balance and the refinement of oneีs current motor program.

5)    Recognize those patients who might not benefit from water therapy intervention.

 

FACULTY: Marty Biondi, PT, CSCS, ATRIC, is co-owner of Therapeutic & Wellness Specialists, an outpatient orthopedic clinic with two locations and contracts to perform aquatic therapy. She has been involved in various aspects of aquatics for over 30 years including pool administration, design and program implementation, risk management, and now as a physical therapist using water to treat various diagnoses.
