COURSE DESCRIPTION:

It was estimated that in 2002 the Medicare population sustained over 3 million falls with 2.2 million leading to injury. Falls among the aging population is a growing problem. Obtain the tools to screen a client and determine fall risk. Correlating land-based testing with aquatic exercise programming will allow participants to objectively document risk for falls and implement an effective aquatic exercise. Components to postural control including visual, somatosensory and vestibular systems are presented to assist the participant in assessment and treatment planning. Evidence-based material is combined with practical application techniques.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

1)    Discuss the subsystems that contribute to postural control.

2)    Describe and perform five standardized balance tests.

3)    Design an effective aquatic exercise and treatment strategies to address the deficits found during testing.
