COURSE
DESCRIPTION: Examine how
the aquatic environment can be implemented to assist in post-surgical
rehabilitation to aid in client pain, range of motion, and return to functional
activities of daily living and of sport. Concerns associated with wound and
tissue healing, care for wounds, and when and how to enter the water with
wounds will be described, along with general safety principles of the pool and
facility. Specific injuries and surgical procedures will be presented with a
way to add aquatic rehabilitation as an adjunctive therapy to enhance management
of the post-surgical client.
COURSE
OBJECTIVES:
1) Examine the healing process and phases.
2) Identify healing characteristics of specific tissues.
3) Describe the effects of immobilization on specific tissues.
4) Assess the indications, contraindications, and precautions for
post-surgical aquatic rehabilitation.
5) Identify types of dressings and bandages that are available for use in
aquatic environment to protect surgical wounds/incisions.
6) Explore the benefits of the aquatic environment for post-operative
orthopedic rehabilitation.
7) Determine pool safety considerations with post-operative clients.
8) Discover specific considerations for designing an aquatic rehabilitation
program for each surgical procedure described.
FACULTY: Helen Binkley, PhD, ATC, CSCS*D,
NSCA-CPT*D, FNSCA, ATRIC, is the Athletic Training Education Program Director at
Middle Tennessee State University. Her interests include: strength training and
conditioning, aquatics, rehabilitation, youth, and obesity. She is the editor
of the Rehab and Flexibility Tips
Column in the Strength and Conditioning
Journal, and writes and researchers in her areas of interest.
