Faculty: Maryanne Haggerty, MS

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course will give the participants hands-on and ready-to-implement equipment-based progressions for their patientsŐ orthopedic rehabilitation needs. The correct use and biomechanical advantages in form for progressions and regressions of all major joints will be addressed. The focus will be on the types of equipment (buoyant, resistant and weighted) and their purpose in stability, mobility, and strength for orthopedic progressions. The types of equipment for the early-to-progressed phases of rehabilitation will be outlined to promote the therapeutic to the transitioning phases of recovery. This course will also demonstrate the correlation of specific equipment to directly impact the transition from aquatic to land-based functioning.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

1.         Feel confident in the use of aquatic equipment for progressions and regressions for orthopedic concerns.

2.         Examine how function in all proximal and more distally-placed joints changes with equipment (feet and ankles, knees, hips, lumbar and cervical spine, shoulders, elbows, and wrists).

3.         Choose equipment for goal-focused stability, mobility, and strength/endurance orthopedic progressions

4.         Apply the use of equipment (and the types of equipment) for different phases of rehabilitation - from therapeutic needs to the transitional conditioning phases

5.         Demonstrate the equipment that transitions aquatic exercise to land-based eccentric muscular control promoting functional activities in daily life
