COURSE DESCRIPTION: While orthopedic changes do occur with the normal
aging process, it is how we choose to manage them that defines
our function and certainly our independence. This class will investigate several
of the most common orthopedic issues that confront us with age, and will
attempt to provide movement strategies that might assist with maintaining oneีs
independence. A progression of aquatic-based movements to assist with
maintenance of range of motion, strength, and balance will be discussed.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
1) Explore
specific joint changes with respect to the normal aging process and how these orthopedic
changes affect function.
2) Recognize
specific orthopedic conditions that are common with age, and be able to suggest
specific movement strategies for coping with these changes.
3) Determine
the unique benefits of an aquatic-based program and be able to implement that program
for those with orthopedic issues.
4) Apply a
safe exercise progression in which common orthopedic issues might be addressed.
5) Recognize
and understand the importance of movement with respect to orthopedic problems,
and when movement decreases/is altered, function suffers.
