2324 – Osteoporotic Client: Water Therapy Interventions/Restrictions

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Osteoporotic clients have typically been steered away from aquatic participation due to the decreased weight bearing brought about by immersion. This class will discuss the disease process that defines osteoporosis, its limitations and debilitating effects, and aquatic treatment options. In addition, the class will provide specific exercises progressions that address decreased bone density and will also provide information regarding restricted exercise for this population.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

1)    Obtain a fundamental understanding of the osteoporotic disease process.

2)    Determine a logical progression of treatment for this disease process using both land and water exercises/activities.

3)    Recognize specific water exercise that might benefit clients.

4)    Gain a thorough understanding of specific equipment usage for such a population. Acceptable and contraindicated equipment will be discussed.

5)    Recognize those exercises that place this client at increased risk for fracture.

 

FACULTY: Marty Biondi, PT, CSCS, ATRIC, is co-owner of Therapeutic & Wellness Specialists, an outpatient orthopedic clinic with two locations and contracts to perform aquatic therapy. She has been involved in various aspects of aquatics for over 30 years including pool administration, design and program implementation, risk management, and now as a physical therapist using water to treat various diagnoses.
