COURSE
DESCRIPTION: Osteoporotic clients have typically been steered away from
aquatic participation due to the decreased weight bearing brought about by
immersion. This class will discuss the disease process that defines
osteoporosis, its limitations and debilitating effects, and aquatic treatment
options. In addition, the class will provide specific exercises progressions
that address decreased bone density and will also provide information regarding
restricted exercise for this population.
COURSE
OBJECTIVES:
1) Obtain a
fundamental understanding of the osteoporotic disease process.
2) Determine
a logical progression of treatment for this disease process using both land and
water exercises/activities.
3) Recognize
specific water exercise that might benefit clients.
4) Gain a
thorough understanding of specific equipment usage for such a population. Acceptable
and contraindicated equipment will be discussed.
5) Recognize
those exercises that place this client at increased risk for fracture.
