COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The structure and clinical applications of the four stages of the Aquatic Lumbopelvic Stabilization Protocol will be presented in theory and practiced in the pool session. The anatomy and biomechanics of the lumbopelvic complex will be discussed.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

1) Describe the biomechanics of the lumbopelvic complex.

2) Identify the anatomical structures that provide support and stability to the lumbopelvic complex.

3)   Explore the structure and stages of the ALS Protocol.

4) Selectively apply the various stages and activities featured in the ALS Protocol given the patientÕs clinical diagnosis.

 

FACULTY: Luis Vargas, PhD, PT, ATRIC, has been a physical therapist for over 30 years. Clinically, he brings a wealth of experience and expertise in the areas of cardiopulmonary physical therapy, oncology, infectious disease and, most significantly, aquatic rehabilitation. Academically, he is an experienced anatomist at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. He is the author of the book ÒAquatic Therapy: Interventions and ApplicationsÓ. Dr. Vargas is the recipient of the 2004 Aquatic Therapy Professional of the Year Award and the 2000 Dolphin Award from the Aquatic Therapy and Rehabilitation Institute for his contributions to the aquatic rehabilitation industry. He has created numerous interventions and protocol for various diagnostic groups and has completed several research studies to establish clinical validity for given aquatic therapy interventions.

 

Flavia Bayron, PT, MPA, is an associate professor at the University of Puerto Rico in the physical therapy program. Her area of expertise is in musculoskeletal and sports rehabilitation. She has collaborated with the San Juan Sports Medicine Clinic and the Puerto Rico Olympic Committee.
