COURSE DESCRIPTION: This
course will teach all aspects of successfully treating a frozen shoulder in the
water. You will learn the difference between a Ôfrozen shoulderÕ or adhesive capsulitis and a ÔstiffÕ shoulder, the population of people
who develop shoulder problems, what precipitates the issue, along with the most
effective evidence-based treatments. We will briefly review the anatomy of the
shoulder and how it relates to muscle imbalances and postural re-education. Manual
treatments will be emphasized with aquatic joint mobilizations, myofascial release and deep tissue releases of the deep
stabilizers and surrounding tissue (pectoralis minor
and major, levator scapula, all three trapeziums,
rhomboids, lattisiumus dorsi,
teres minor, subscapularis,
and serratus anterior.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
1) Compare
and contrast the difference between a frozen shoulder/adhesive capsulitis and a tight shoulder.
2) Discuss
at-risk populations, indications and contraindications.
3) Explore
the rationale for the use of modalities and splinting for HEP.
4) Perform
and integrate the information to formulate RX plans.
5) Experience
therapeutic exercises in supine, prone and vertical.
FACULTY: Marilyn McQuade, BS, PT, is a manually based orthopedic physical therapist, specializing in
aquatic therapy. She has 20 years of experience and now focuses on outpatient
orthopedics, both in the water and on land. Her background includes a bachelorÕs
degree in dance education/therapy,
teaching and performing dance, and working as a kinesiotherapist.
She is interested in all forms of bodywork and has been working for the past 10
years in an outpatient orthopedic clinic in Fairfield, CT.
