COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course will teach a variety of manual techniques
and therapeutic exercise for total joint replacement for hips and knees. We
will include both land and pool treatments for the most common surgical
techniques and prosthetics. The newest surgical techniques will be discussed
with therapeutic options to correlate with them. We will review manual mobilizations
and indications of what to use and when to use it. Indications and contraindications with acute and sub-acute
protocols are discussed and experienced. A very brief review of the anatomy and
how it relates to the prosthesis will be included.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
1) Participate
in joint mobilizations, passive range-of-motion, and contract/relax techniques.
2) Experience
quad pumping, soft tissue massage, myofascial release
and adaptations for each patient.
3) Examine scar
mobilizations, patella mobilizations and hip release techniques.
4) Explore LE
stretching, Dynasplints and JAS splints for tight
joints.
5) Review kinesiotaping that tolerates water therapy.
FACULTY: Marilyn McQuade, BS, PT, is a manually based orthopedic physical therapist, specializing in
aquatic therapy. She has 20 years of experience and now focuses on outpatient
orthopedics, both in the water and on land. Her background includes a bachelorŐs
degree in dance education/therapy, teaching and performing dance, and working
as a kinesiotherapist. She is interested in all forms
of bodywork and has been working for the past 10 years in an outpatient
orthopedic clinic in Fairfield, CT.
