COURSE
DESCRIPTION: This full-day comprehensive course will cover the
various aspects of balance and the benefits of aquatic exercise/rehab techniques
to achieve improved balance. Exercises, progressions, modifications and their
appropriate application to varied balance deficits will be experienced. The
pool lab will also include application of the motor learning paradigm to
positively affect balance. The treatment techniques used in this course will be
geared to the adult population, both the individual rehabbing from a lower
extremity injury/insult to the older adult who seeks to improve dynamic
balance.
COURSE
OBJECTIVES:
1)
Examine the motor learning
paradigm affecting balance acquisition.
2)
Appreciate the
multi-factorial process that contributes to good balance.
3)
Explore the unique
characteristics of water that can facilitate balance acquisition.
4)
Incorporate various water
exercises in a logical progression to address and improve dynamic land balance.
5)
Recognize those who
require additional support/attention to successfully participate in such
activities.
FACULTY:
Marty Biondi,
PT, CSCS, ATRIC, is co-owner of Therapeutic
& Wellness Specialists, an outpatient orthopedic clinic with two locations
and contracts to perform aquatic therapy. She has been involved in various
aspects of aquatics for over 30 years including pool administration, design and
program implementation, risk management, and now as a physical therapist using
water to treat various diagnoses.
