COURSE DESCRIPTION: 

From SI joint dysfunction to Stenosis to disk issues to lumbar fusion - how can we safely and effectively rehab these patients? The research says the pool is the place. We will review these diagnoses and discuss treatment techniques in the lecture. At the pool weÕll gain hands-on experience with both vertical and supine interventions. You will leave with many water exercises and treatment techniques that will help to restore optimal biomechanics and decreased pain. Incorporate evidence-based practice into your aquatic treatment plan for pelvic pain. A comprehensive handout is included.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

1)   Examine diagnoses of SI Joint Dysfunction, Stenosis, Herniated Disk, Lumbar Fusion.

2)   Explore the research of aquatic therapy for low back pain to incorporate evidence-based aquatic rehab into practice.

3)   Determine aquatic therapy treatment techniques in supine and vertical, the rationales and protocols.

 

FACULTY: Terri Mitchell, PTA, ATRIC, has been involved with aquatic fitness since 1982. She is a Training Specialist with the Aquatic Exercise Association, a Licensed Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) specializing in aquatic therapy, and instructor of a variety of aquatic fitness classes to persons of all ages and abilities. Terri is on staff at the University of Texas at Austin and enjoys working with young adults in the water. She holds certifications from AEA, ATRI, and IAR. Terri is a Certified Personal Trainer for both land and water. She is co-author of ÒApplications of PNF Techniques in the Aquatic SettingÓ manual and co-producer of ÒPNF in the PoolÓ video. She is the 2001 recipient of ATRIÕs Dolphin Award and the 2010 recipient of the ATRI Professional Award.
