COURSE DESCRIPTION: This land-based course will delve into aquatic interventions for various hip conditions from replacements to labral repairs to common running/overuse injuries.  While fairly passive aquatic exercise is commonly associated with a reduction in hip pain, weÕll take it further and offer specific exercises that are beneficial for various hip conditions.  After providing a brief description of common hip surgeries and overuse conditions, weÕll discuss contraindications and modifications for specific hip surgical interventions.  Exercises and progressions applied to varied deficits will be shown. Finally, the course covers what equipment is appropriate for specific surgeries and clients.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

1)   Determine various hip replacement and repair surgeries, how they impact return to function, and restrictions that are imposed and the reasons for such precautions.

2)   Examine various hip overuse injuries and how such injuries impact the rehab process.

3)   Recognize limitations due to joint replacement protocols and be able to accommodate those individuals so they may participate in a mainstream class.

4)   Provide a progression of aquatic exercises to address client limitations.

5)   Explore modifications in specific exercises to accomplish hip precaution criteria as well as address commonly seen deficits post THA and other hip surgeries.

6)   Determine equipment that is appropriate or contraindicated for specific surgeries and patients.

7)   Address strength, muscle endurance and balance deficits commonly noted post-hip injuries using effective aquatic progressions.
