Fall Prevention Strategies

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Fall prevention may not seem like a lively topic, but it's important. As you get older, physical changes and health conditions make falls more likely. In fact, falls are a leading cause of injury among older adults. You will learn the most successful methods of fall prevention and research-based, functional movement patterns that you can add to your train-to-transfer protocols.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

1)  Examine the factors associated with an increased risk of falls.

2)  Explore the importance of improved gait patterns.

3)  Determine the importance of weight-bearing exercise.

4)  Establish a well-rounded Fall Prevention Program.

 

FACULTY:  Eduardo Netto, MS, is the Fitness Director of the Body Tech Health Club in Brazil and has a master’s degree in human motricity. He is an international presenter and well-respected fitness professional and consultant in Brazil. He has published books, DVDs and a CD-ROM on fitness programs.

 

Chair and Seated Exercise Adaptations

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Utilize exercises based in Pilates and functional fitness adapted for the seated client. Practical lab includes total body conditioning: UE, LE, trunk, postural, core, hand, and ankle exercises in a chair or wheelchair using body weight, toning balls, and flex bands. Progress seated workout from land to water using Pilates, increasing trunk stability.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

1)  Determine eight basic exercise modalities for core and functional training.

2)  Experience 15 Seated Core Exercises

3)  Explore 15 UE/LE flex band exercises.

 

FACULTY:  Anne Pringle Burnell, ATRIC, created the programs: Peyow Aqua Pilates and Stronger Seniors. She is a presenter and educator at conferences, and holds the following certifications: CAFS, Ai Chi, AEA, Arthritis Foundation, ACE, AFAA/NASM, and AquaStretchTM. She is an Instructor Trainer for Stott Pilates/Merrithew Health & Fitness. She teaches at Galter Life Center/Swedish Covenant Hospital, Peninsula Chicago, University Illinois Chicago, and Core Evolution.
