2322 – Hip and Back Issues and Exercises

COURSE DESCRIPTION: It’s all about load, right? The water will help you with these clients as it decreases load and as you reteach functional movement in an off-loaded environment. This session will give you therapeutic exercises and a protocol with varied options. These exercises can be used during a session with you, independently as homework, or after the client has been released from therapy.

We’ll review six basic soft tissue hip and back issues that inhibit functional movement (muscle imbalance, asymmetrical movement, weak core, poor alignment, inappropriate muscle recruitment patterns, and the major one: pain) with exercises and a protocol for modification / amelioration.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
1) Experience exercises and concepts vital to effective and safe movement.
2) Review common issues that clients with hip or back pain, surgery or injury experience.
3) Experiment with the following technique exercises with a hip and back focus: Feldenkrais, LMT (Loaded Movement Training), Ai Chi, BackHab, Pilates, PNF, UCT (Unpredictable Command Technique), Ai Chi Ne, and Burdenko.
4) Discuss application of the techniques.

FACULTY: Ruth Sova, MS, ATRIC, president of the Aquatic Therapy & Rehab Institute, served on the Wisconsin Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, received the Governor’s Entrepreneurial Award, the IDEA Outstanding Business Award, the first Presidential Sports Award in aquatic exercise, and AEA’s Contribution to the Industry Award. She has authored eighteen books and over 50 DVDs and CDs. She is known for her work in aquatic fitness, aquatic therapy, BackHab, Ai Chi and creating connections with other aquatic, health and therapy organizations.
