COURSE DESCRIPTION: Many people (80-90%) have severe neck or back pain and these are two of the most prevalent causes of pain and disability. Physical therapy is the first option, but a spinal surgeon should first interpret a patient’s history (including family history, environmental), physical examination and diagnostic images to understand where the pain is coming from.

This course will look at the future of spine surgery and the advancements in spinal fusion surgery including hybrid cervical spine surgery, artificial disc replacement, robotic guided spine surgery, use of augmented reality for surgery, artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms improving surgical outcomes. These will impact traditional aquatic therapy to include revised protocols and timing of when different treatments are safely initiated based on the literature available.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
1) Understand specific spinal issues and probable causes including age and genetics.
2) Review the most common diagnoses resulting in back pain.
3) Explain the latest techniques in spinal surgery.
4) Discuss the importance of balance to stabilization/core strength before mobilization based on the motor learning paradigm identifying muscle imbalances.

FACULTY: Mary Wykle, PhD, AEA, ATRIC, Ai Chi Master, is president of MW Associates and specializes in aquatic program development for all populations for ATRI, AEA and the National Spine Health Foundation where she is one of four national advocates advising patients on spinal questions.
