COURSE DESCRIPTION: Yoga is an increasingly popular form of exercise in the world today. It differentiates itself from other exercises because it makes connections between mind and body, and has protocol beyond physical movements such as controlled breathing to develop focus and attention, which helps with pain management strategies. “Yoga Therapy is the process of empowering individuals to progress toward improved health and well-being through the application of the teachings and practices of Yoga,” as defined by the International Association of Yoga Therapists. “Yoga therapy is a self-empowering process, where the care-seeker, with the help of the Yoga Therapist, implements a personalized and evolving Yoga Practice, that not only addresses the illness in a multi-dimensional manner, but also aims to alleviate suffering in a progressive, non-invasive and complementary manner, depending on the nature of the illness. Yoga therapy can not only be preventative or curative, but also serve as a means to manage the illness, or facilitate healing in the person at all levels.”
Practicing yoga facilitates calmness due to larger doses of gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) from the thalamus which suppresses neural activity. In the water especially, older adults can enjoy countering cognitive decline along with the physical benefits of yoga to improve their quality of life. In this workshop, we will identify areas where aqua yoga therapy has proven to be beneficial, as well as experience a range of yoga poses in the water and how they may enhance resilience and well-being across many conditions. Therapeutic yoga is defined as the application of yoga postures and practice to the treatment of health conditions which involves psychological, emotional and spiritual pain, suffering and limitations. In this course, you will be able to experience aqua yoga for yourself in order to determine if and how it may be applicable for your clients, but also to help you personally obtain and sustain optimum strength, flexibility, balance and stability. This workshop is open to all levels and current knowledge of yoga philosophy and application is not needed beforehand, but may be useful.
1) Overview of yoga system, hatha yoga and various schools and styles.
2) Outline the 8-limbed system of yoga and the 5-fold Panchakosha model that is used in Yoga Therapy application and examine how it can help empower our clients to improve their mental, physical and emotional wellbeing.
3) Explore mounting research into the healthcare benefits of yoga which will demonstrate, unequivocally, that regular yoga is worth the investment of time and effort.
4) Explain how yoga therapy differs from general yoga instruction and the current protocol governed by IAYT.
5) Compare benefits of taking yoga into the water rather than staying on land.
6) Review and practice yoga breathing techniques and see how they can help shift balance from the SNS and flight and flight to PNS and the relaxation response. Also, examine how to develop greater concentration during yoga practice.
7) Discuss various case studies where yoga in the water has benefitted clients beyond what they could have achieved on land. Eg…Gilliane Barre, FML, Obesity, Spinal stenosis, pregnancy.
8) Outline how the pool lab will enable us to cultivate self-discipline and study in order to experience introspection and integration of mind and body via the breath and investigate how this might be useful for specific clients.
9) Examine various poses affecting the body systems by cultivating breath awareness, relaxation, strength, flexibility, stability and balance.
FACULTY: Camella Nair, Swami, C-IAYT, is one of the few ordained female Swamis currently teaching in the Kriya Lineage. It is an unbroken line of gurus dating back thousands of years. She pioneered Aqua Kriya Yoga 20 years ago and travels to certify teachers in this field. As a female disciple, she authored “Prenatal Kriya Yoga” which is a mystical journey into pregnancy and motherhood.
