2642- Aquatic Therapy for Spasticity and Contracture

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Focus on the unique nature of spasticity and contracture and how these conditions respond to aquatic therapy. Participants will be introduced to a few effective hands-on aquatic techniques for the treatment of spastic and contracted motor disorders. The aquatic practitioner will gain valuable insight to the use of aquatic therapy to maximize relaxation and increase tissue elasticity and joint mobility, as well as, to facilitate a functional response for stabilization.

1) Examine spasticity specific aquatic therapy accommodations and aquatic factors to consider for individuals with spasticity and/or contracture.
2) Focus on treatment goals depending upon level of spasmodic activity.
3) Discover interactive assistive manual contacts to either facilitate or inhibit reflexive movement of the lower and extremities.
4) Explore specific equipment applications as well as experience and practice spasticity, and spasticity with contracture techniques during pool lab.

FACULTY: Julia Meno, CTRS, CMT, ATRIC, is the founder/owner of Therapeutic Aquatics, Inc. and provides individual Myofascial Aquatic Body Work, AquaStretch™ and adaptive aquatic classes. She is the author and publisher of The Bad Ragaz Ring Method Visual Instructional Manual and Video; and co-producer of the PNF in The Pool and Myofascial Aquatic Body Work DVDs. She received the 2014 Aquatic Therapy Professional Award and the 2002 ATRI Tsunami Spirit Award.
